PERSIA INTERVIEWED IN SOUL TRAIN

Artist to Artist: Persia White – Pure Rebel Soul

When we talk about “Black music”, we almost always are referring to sounds made popular by artists like Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and Patti Labelle. Even if unconsciously, our minds float to images of Diana Ross and the Supremes and other Motown greats, or hip-hop giants from Run-DMC to Rick Ross. The term “Black music” is used to pay homage to and envelope the legends and the unsung of R&B, soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz, and gospel, and yet, somehow, a net so generously cast still fails to capture the whole of our musical experience and contributions. Left scattered and often unattended are those artists whose musical offerings bring with them punk, electronica, trip hop, and straight-up rock n roll. We too frequently overlook bands like Fishbone, Living Colour, Three5Human, and Chocolate Genius, Inc., or push out of our collective consciousness former urban radio staples like Terrence Trent D’Arby (now known as Sananda Maitreya) because the music they’re creating comes from a seemingly foreign space compared to that to which we have become accustomed. With such extraordinary cultural diversity coming from the vast African Diaspora, and the African American cultural aesthetic in particular, there is still so much that we are liable to miss if we rely solely on what is popular or mainstream.

And then, there is Persia White. Click here to read more.

April 2011

Persia White will be starring alongside Stacey Dash and Reagan Gomez in the upcoming Corey Grant comedy Dysfunctional Friends.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“WANTING” THE FIRST SINGLE FROM PERSIA WHITE’S DEBUT ALBUM PREMIERES WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 7

Persia Takes Us On a Journey to Her Center of Desire In Debut Album MECCA

Los Angeles, CA – October 6 – Actress, singer and activist Persia White is premiering the first single from her debut album, Mecca, on Wednesday, October 7th 2009. Titled “Wanting,” the song is the first step in the yearning, aural journey that is Mecca. The single and album will be released digitally on iTunes, Nokia, Amazon mp3, Shockhound, Rhapsody, Amie Street and more. The complete Mecca will be released on Persia’s birthday, Sunday, October 25th.

The Webster’s Dictionary definition of Mecca is “a place that attracts people of a particular group or with a particular interest. A center of great desire.” Explains Persia, “Mecca is a story of birth, a ruff guide through the journey of my life, encompassing many of my phases. No regrets. It’s all positive in my heart yet it’s also a little melancholy.” Though Mecca is the tale of her life’s journey, getting to the point of creating this body of work has been a journey as well. Best known for her role in the CW series “Girlfriends,” Persia initially set out to be a recording artist and performer. After moving to LA and rejecting several album deals for lack of creative control in the contracts, Persia grew her songwriting and composing talents on the backburner while building her acting career. Says Persia, “When I make music I want it to be honest and to be me. I wanted to wait and do it the way I felt it should be in my heart. I’m so grateful to finally be in a place to release my own, honest work.”

Mecca is a sprawling, twelve track album, combining a number of genres, including electronica and trip-hop and including elements of blues and prog-rock. Music aficionados will hear the influence of Bjørk and Massive Attack underneath Persia’s mysterious aural landscapes.

The album has several guest stars, including ex-fiancé Saul Williams on the intense, drum-driven “Receive” and the electric beats of “Danger.” Being released for the first time ever are two songs featured on the TV show Girlfriends: the gut wrenching “Choices” along with “Past Mistakes,” and “Tease,” featuring the father of Trip-hop TRICKY. Several haunting collaborations (including the first single “Wanting, ” and the tracks “Haunt,” “Receive” and “Perfect”) were the result of co-writing with producer/musician Ric Alien. Persia has worked with great artists such as Gary Wallis of Pink Floyd, Dominique Miller of Sting, Jerome Dillon of Nine Inch Nails and Big Bio of Outcast. Persia has also written soundtrack music for three Independent films. The overall album was produced by Persia herself, mixed by the legendary Dave Way and mastered by (BigBass) Brian Gardner.
